Just prior to the outbreak of World War II, Germany and the Soviet Union entered into a very surprising non-aggression pact. Taking place in August of 1939, just a few weeks before Germany's invasion of Poland, the treaty shocked the world, as the two nations had previously been on nearly hostile terms with each other.
What proved to be an even greater surprise was the secret clause in the non-aggression pact that allowed the USSR to occupy the eastern half of Poland if Hitler invaded Poland.

∙ 7y agoThe Nazi-Soviet Non Agression Pact. It was signed in August of 1939 to ensure Germany and the Soviet Union wouldn't attack each other. It was supposed to last for 10 years, but Hitler violated it in 1941, invading Russia.

∙ 11y agoThey agreed not to attack each other, and the split up eastern Europe between themselves. Germany would get about half of Poland; the USSR would get the rest, plus Germany wouldn't complain when USSR invaded the Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) or Finland. Germany agreed to it because they knew they were about to fight a war with England and France, and didn't want to fight Russia at the same time (which they had done 20 years earlier in World War I).

∙ 8y agoThe German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact was signed in August of 1939. It was a "peace agreement between the two dictatorships. As part of the "deal" which was secret, it called for or allowed the USSR to take over the eastern half of Poland when Germany attacked the western half. A few days after September 1, 1939, France and Britain declared war on Germany and Italy. And the USSR made an assault on Finland.
