The first evidence of inhabitants of Wyoming show they probably arrived about 11,500 B.C. through the Bering Straight, possibly part of the Clovis culture.

Then the Shoshone, Arapaho, Cheyenne and Crow lived in the eastern portion of the area with the Ute in the western portion.

The Verendrye brothers, Francois and Louis, and John Colter were the first European explorers in Wyoming.

Then came the fur traders and trappers, mostly French or French Canadian, followed by the westward-bound pioneers.
