When I enlisted in 1964 I was making $64.00 per month After a few weeks I was promoted to PVt/E-2 and it went to $68.00 per month. After about five months I was promoted to PFC/E-3 and it went to $78.00 per month. At about 18 months in I as raised in rank (actually it's not a promotion) to Specialist 4th Class (E-4)and the whopping sum of $104 per month. About this time we got an across the board raise and I jumped to $140.00 per month.

Shortly thereafter I was converted from SP4 to Corporal which is still an E-4 rating but is a Non Commissioned Officer. In theory a SP4 was a Specialist but held no more actual rank than a PFC. (That same thinking went for SP5/SP6)

The pay charts showed Specialist ratings through Specialist seventh class but I never saw anything higher than a SP5. In about 1966 I was promoted to Sergeant/E-5 and made about $200.00 a month. I got out in 1968 as a Staff Sergeant/E-6 making a base pay of $390.00 per month. In addition to your base pay you also drew a few dollars a month uniform allowance, a few bucks for overseas pay, about $50.00 for combat pay if in Vietnam and additional pay for hazardous duty like jumping out of airplanes, etc. There was also extra pay for incentive if you were in a job that was hard to fill or required a lot of training. It could get real good (several hundred dollars a month for some jobs) I was a Military Policemen and the highest extra pay allowed for that MOS was superior performance pay of around $30.00 per month. If you are not confused enough already there was also extra pay for quarters and rations that kicked in at about the E-6 level and really good TDY (temporary duty) pay if you were working detached duty where there was no military base nearby. I think the highest combined pay I earned was a shade less than $500.00 per month.

Depending on where you were stationed the pay was great or terrible. As a PFC and SP4 on Okinawa I was only broke a few days out of each month. The EM and NCO clubs took real good care of you and had lots of "free beer" nights and dime nights. The prices at the Clubs and PX were great. A carton of smokes cost me $1.10. As a Staff Sergeant drawing Quarters and Rations plus SP pay in North East Africa I was living like a king. Even though I was drawing quarters and rations It was kind of a wink wink nod nod thing and I had a room in the barracks and if I wanted to eat in the mess hall nobody ever checked my status. (I think they were supposed to charge you about $0.40 a meal if you didn't have a chow card.
