Queen was always known as "Queen". Previous to that, they had been "Smile", but that was only a band with Roger Taylor and Brian May. Many people think that that's what Queen initially was, but it wasn't. When Roger and Brian, and also Freddie Mercury, decided to form a band together, Freddie decided they should call the band Queen.

"Queen had been formed a couple of years earlier, having grown out of a group called Smile, which featured Brian May and Roger Taylor as two of its members. It underwent a metamorphosis when these two students were joined first by Freddie Mercury as vocalist amd then, in answer to an ad, on the college notice board, by a quiet bassist called John Deacon."
