The steel mills of North Alabama were rebuilt. The cotton mills along the fall line were rebuilt. The south slowly added manufacturing to farming.
The manufacturing began by making low value products. The cotton mills made simple clothing, not the high fashion of New York. The steel mills made rails, not the new automobiles. Still, the South diversified.
