Probably the air-cooled and fast-firing ( 900 plus RPM) German MG-34 which was made buy a variety of German gun manufacturers including Mauser. The MG-42 was similar but more economical to maintain in the field, a lighter model, both rifle caliber- 7.92 MM, hence ( light) machine guns, as opposed to submachine guns ( like the famous Thompson) or Heavy MG"s such as the Browning .50 and the Oerlikon 20 MM ( .78) which was and is really an automatic cannon and can and did fire explosive ( armor piercing indenciary tracer) rounds.
