After the Texas Annexation (when America admitted Texas into the Union as the 28th state), America claimed that Mexico was trespassing onto American soil. America claimed that the border between Mexico and The United States was the Rio Grande River. However, Mexico said it was the Nueces River. Many people believe that America claimed that the border was the Rio Grande River so they could easily acquire more land from Mexico.

Texas claimed everything north and east of the Rio Grande and Mexico used the traditional boundary of the Nueces River as the border which left the land in between in dispute. To avoid problems, Texans respected the more powerful Mexican Army until they were annexeded by the US at which time they began to push south.

The US did NOT go to war with Mexico for the Mexican border, but they didn't go to war for the American border either. They fought for the US-Mexican border.
