none of them knew what to expect. They didn't bring many animals, and most of the men who went didn't know the first thing about farming or cooking. They were wealthy and unaccustomed to hard work or hunger.

They didn’t avoid starvation. Out of 104 men who landed there within 6 months there were only 34 alive. They looked for gold instead of planting crops, built the fort on the worse spot in the area, died of disease from the mosquitoes, and were in an empire of 15,000 Native Americans.
