South Vietnam had two types of climates; the southern portion of SOUTH Vietnam was swampy with high humidity. The central portion of SOUTH Vietnam was called the "Central Highlands", and north of that was MR-1 (Military Region 1-commonly referred to as "I" Corps, just below the DMZ-17th Parallel). The Highlands and I Corps had fairly normal weather, such as like California, with no snow in it's mountains though. The swampy marshes (Mekong Delta) of the southern areas was fought mostly with the Viet Cong (VC) which were southern born communist guerrillas. These fights were small, maybe 30 to 50 men verses a platoon or company of US/Allied Forces containing 100 or more men. Fought in the mud of the delta, machingun links were always jamming (being caked with mud), and actions with the VC were often short, 3 minutes maybe. They'd shoot, then leave the area. Night time, they might shoot a little bit longer, then disappear into the night. They didn't want to engage much longer than a few minutes, because they knew US procedures...we'd call in an Air Strike or Artillery on them. So they had to make it a short contact (firefight). In the north, the Highlands & I Corps; The enemy was most often the NVA (North Viet Army). These men, more often than not, fought and held their ground. Unless ordered to withdraw by their commanders, we had to either kill them, or withdraw ourselves and call in artillery and/or air strikes on them. Then go back in and see if they were still holding their positions...or all dead. These battles with the NVA were often company sized fights (100 or so men per side). If the NVA got to battalion strength (600 man units) then this called for a "major operation." These were the infamous "Ia Drang" ("We Were Soldiers..." starring Mel Gibson), or "Hamburger Hill", battles.

The unusual climate and conditions in Vietnam, coupled with the fighting style of the Viet Cong created a very inhospitable environment for American soldiers. The climate was subtropical, making it particularly unhealthy for soldiers who had to endure heat, humidity and monsoons wearing heavy uniforms and gear. The jungle like terrain made passage laborious. The jungles held dangers from malarial mosquitoes, leeches, ticks, fire ants, venomous snakes and the occasional rampaging tiger. The Viet Cong were crafty and masters at guerillas warfare, so they were kept in a constant state of anxiety, wondering which direction or what type of attack would come next.

Humid and dusty; like living in the old west...canteen water and dusty trails (while riding tanks and ACAVs, on a daily basis, for a whole year).
