There is no conflict between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

After Ireland was split into two countries (Northern Ireland & the Republic) most of the conflict was within Northern Ireland only. This was between the two communities and the conflict was over Irish Unification and Independence from Britain. It mostly involved terrorists on both sides, and the security forces trying to control the situation. This was not a war in the traditional sense, in that there was not continual fighting on the streets. Events could be weeks apart, and then just be one single shooting or a bomb.

Northern Ireland is still part of the United Kingdom. The predominantly Protestant population of six of the nine counties of the Irish province of Ulster elected to stay within the United Kingdom when the Free State was formed in 1922.

There is still some violence even today in the form of riots. Although it typically happens at certain times of the year, particularly around July 12th, when there are sectarian parades, it does still happen. To answer your question, it all started when England began what is called a plantation, where it placed loyal English and Scottish people in the Ulster area to displace the native Irish that were already living there. As you can imagine this caused and is still causing a lot of anger and resentment between the two peoples. One reason animosity still exists today is that the descendants of the planters want to remain part of the UK while the descendants of the native Irish want to be reabsorbed by Ireland.

You could say that there is 800 years of history that eventually led to the partition of Ireland. The last phase which led to the treaty that created the partition was the Irish War of Independence.
