France was basically bankrupt. King Louis XVI gave millions of dollars to the Americans in their fight for independence from England. Marie Antoinette spent money lavishly every day. King Louis XVI tried raising taxes on the Third Estate of France (the commoners )which was 97% of the population. The Third Estate revolted, broke away from the Estates General (the French legislature) and formed its own legislature, the National Assembly. After the storming of the Bastille, the National Assembly took control of the government and dramatically changed the tax structure of France.
In 1830, middle-class citizens resented the privileges of the French aristocracy and wanted the government to extend suffrage. Working-class people demanded decent pay. Louis Philippe's policies favored the middle class over the workers. An economic slump in the 1840s caused additional unrest, and workers rioted against the upper- and middle-class interests that controlled the government.
During the Seven Year's War France lost most of its overseas treasure to Great Britain. The resulting ecomnomic damage almost destroyed the monarchy. However, some of the economic was repaired in the 1760's by the minister, the duc de Choiseul but Louis XV left his successor, his grandson Louis XVI, a debt of 4000 million livres when he died in 1774.
