Before the Boston Tea Party were the taxes of the colonial people. The saying "taxation without representation" comes from this time period. The colonial americans were paying an incredibly high amount of taxes BUT they were not allowed to have a representative in parliament. There were taxes on everything, paper, tea, etc. When tea started being taxed, the colonists had enough, so they dumped it overboard in the act called the Boston Tea Party.

Being that the Boston Tea Party happened in 1773, there were many events that led up to this event.

Massachusetts had been enduring the intolerable acts and suffering under the many taxes that were imposed by the parliament of King George III. These taxes and other very unjust laws were putting the citizens at great unrest, but they for the most part did not consider revolution at this time.

For the American colonists, Anglicization, the ideology that means acting more like English people, had taken affect and colonists didn't want to revolt, but to simply be included in the governing of the British Empire.

Another very important event that led up to the Boston Tea Party was the Boston Massacre. This act was widely publicized, making the British soldiers seem inhuman in their acts, even though they were being viciously attacked by Boston residents.

All in all, the general unrest of the Colonists stemmed from the Seven Years War (French and Indian War). This war shifted British policy toward what would eventually lead to the Revolution, even though the Colonists were becoming Anglicized at the same time.
An incident that led to the Boston Tea Party was the Sugar Tax that the British imposed.

The Boston Tea Party was a protest of the lowering of the cost of the British tea by the government and the East India tea company who had gotten a bail out from the crown in 1773. The smugglers in the colonies found the Dutch tea that they sold was higher in price than the British tea, so they staged the Boston Tea Party and others in harbors in the colonies ( Hamilton was one of the largest smugglers in the colonies and a founding member of the Son's of Liberty). The cost of tea also went as far back as the Navigation Acts and the restricting of trade to and from the colonies passed from 1650-1733. Tea was also taxed in 1767 in the Townsend Acts.

After the Boston Tea Party The direct consequence was the enactment of the Declaratory Act (declared that Parliament had the right to tax anything they wanted) and the Coercive/Intolerable Acts which closed the port of Boston. And the Revolutionary war occured because of the Boston Tea Party.

In 1773, Britain imposed the Tea Act on the colonies. The Tea Act stated that the colonists could only buy and drink British tea imported from the East India Company. However, the colonists were not happy about this tea monopoly for the East India Company, so on December 16, 60 Boston colonists jumped aboard the tea ships and dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor.
