== == The great majority of them (about 90%) were murdered by German soldiers. Initially, many of them were forced to live in appalling conditions in ghettos established by the Nazis. Warsaw, Krakow and Lodz (Litzmannstadt) are among the best known. Late in 1941, Chelmno extermination camp was established for the sole purpose of gassing Jews. Other extermination camps followed: Belzec, the Birkenau section of Auschwitz, Sobibor, Treblinka II and a key section of Majdanek. Just before the start of World War 2, over one-third of all Jews in Europe lived in Poland - about 3.3 million out of about 9.5 million. By the end of the war, 3 million Polish Jews had been killed by the Nazis. (This is based on pre-war frontiers for both figures). Many Jews were saved by Poles who risked their lives doing so. However, after the war, there were pogroms in Poland and a further 600 Jews were killed . The best known of these pogroms took place in Kielce in July 1946. Many Jews fled to the United States, or Israel, when it was established in 1948.

1. They were subject to all kinds of petty restrictions that made it very difficult to earn a living. Some were beaten up and killed at random by the Nazis. 2. They were rounded up and forced to move into ghettos, which were sealed off from surrounding areas. In these ghettos they were entirely dependent on the Nazis for food, water and all essentials. Some ghettos were able to produce some goods which were traded for various things. 3. They were deported to death camps, where about 90% of the Polish Jews were killed.
in Krakau they were moved to a ghetto on the other side of town and eventuslly to the camps

The Jews of Krakow were subject to all the usual harassments and restrictions by the Nazis.

The only difference (of sorts) in the case of Krakow was that the city was the capital of the Generalgouvernement (the German occupied 'state' set up in 1939) and some of the German administrators want it cleared of Jews particularly quickly, but they found that this was impractical.

In the early stages of the Nazi occupation the Jews were frequently ordered out of the city. Many left for the surrounding countryside, where they were resented and forced back into the city. Then, in 1941, they were forced to move into a ghetto (in the Podgorze district) which was sealed off.

Some Krakow Jews were sent to Plaszow, where they were forced to build the concentration camp and work for the SS. Others were sent to Belzec and Auschwitz. The Krakow Ghetto was dissolved on 14 March 1943, and many thousands of its Jews were killed by the Nazis.

Plaszow has become well known as a result of the film Schindler's List.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what happened, but supposedly German troops attacked a radio station in an ethnicly German part of Poland. Then they put Polish uniforms on dead civilians and announced that the Polish army had attacked the station. Then they invaded Poland to 'protect' the Germanic people living there.

What some people don't know is that while Germany invaded Poland from the west, Russia invaded Poland from the east. At the end of the war there was an agreement made during the Yalta conference that permitted the Soviet Union to acquire the eastern territory of Poland while some German territories were added to the Polish Republic.
