There are answers ranging from the Mustang to the Tempest to the Spitfire Mk XIV. The USAAF had kill records back as far as August 1944 from what I've read. From that, I would have to say that it was indeed the P-51D. These were also some of the best planes for fighting the jets because of their combination of high speed, especially in a dive from above a bomber formation, and high manuervability in the hands of an experienced pilot. Another interesting fact is that the Americans also built the super-fast and lightened P-47M as an attempt to kill Me 262's. They could do a rather good job at this task with their 475mph+ max speed in a dive on the 262's when they weren't suffering troubles from their highly tuned engines. The problem of jets was solveable, the allies just had to be using the right planes.

There were literally dozens of British aircraft, however the most famous of those were the Spitfire & Hurricane fighters. The Lancaster, Manchester and Wellington bombers. What is the purpose of a fighter aircraft?

A fighter aircraft is a military aircraft designed primarily for air-to-air combat against other aircraft, as opposed to bombers and attack aircraft, whose main mission is to attack ground targets. The hallmarks of a fighter are its speed, maneuverability, and small size relative to other combat aircraft. Many fighters have secondary ground-attack capabilities, and some are designed as dual-purpose fighter-bombers. Often, aircraft that do not fulfill the standard definition are called fighters. This may be for political or national security reasons, for advertising purposes or other reasons.A fighter's main purpose is to establish air superiority over a battlefield. Since World War I, achieving and maintaining air superiority has been essential for victory in conventional warfare. The success or failure of a belligerent's efforts to gain air supremacy hinges on several factors including the skill of its pilots, the tactical soundness of its doctrine for deploying its fighters and the numbers and performance of those fighters. Because of the importance of air superiority, since the dawn of aerial combat armed forces have constantly competed to develop technologically superior fighters and to deploy these fighters in greater numbers, and fielding a viable fighter fleet consumes a substantial proportion of the defense budgets of modern armed forces.

What airplanes were in d-day?

I Belive that there were p-51s,dc-3s and other ones that im not sure about. The Allies used thousands of planes for bombing and attacking the German troops and supplies. They sent all the aircraft that could be used in any way. So basically, any aircraft that was stationed in UK was sent to support the invasion. On the day of the invasion, the German air force only sent two FW-190 fighters to attack the troops.
