The video game character Mario first appeared in an arcade game titled "Donkey Kong", in which you must climb up a series of ladders and obstacles to save a girl named Paulina from the clutches of a giant ape who throws barrels and other things at you. He was originally called Jumpman, and he was based off of the creator's landlord.

The arcade game appeared in 1981 and the Game Boy version in 1994.
