Macy's debuted Felix the Cat, the first air-filled cartoon character balloon at its Thanksgiving day parade in 1927 (helium balloons were introduced in 1928).
Although Felix was the first licensed character, it was not the only balloon in the parade that year. Technically, the first balloon may have been a 21-foot tall caricature of singer/actor Eddie Cantor at the beginning of the lineup. The most popular balloon was a 60-foot inflated dinosaur. Others included a group of cavemen and assorted turkeys, chickens and ducks, all designed by Tony Sarg and manufactured by Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Akron, OH.
