The first Federal legislation to prohibit slavery was not a law but a document which had the force and effect of law. It was the U. S. Constitution which was ratified in 1789. Article I, section 9 therein states that after 1808 no slaves shall be imported into the U. S. That is The Congress shall not have the power to prohibit the importation of slaves into the U. S. prior to that year.

  • In the USA, slavery was prohibited by the Thirteenth Amendment to the US Constitution, introduced by President Lincoln.
  • In Britain and much of the British Empire, slavery was abolished by the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, championed by several groups that are still active today. The Act was later repealed in 1998, but replaced by more relevant legislation that has the same effect.
  • In Russia, as well as areas like Wallachia and Moldavia, slavery was gradually lessened in the 1840s and 1850s, but only officially abolished by the Emancipation Reform of 1861 in Russia, under Alexander II's reign.
  • In Hungary, King Stephen I of Hungary declared any slave in or around his territory would immediately become free in his laws around the year 1000.
  • In Sweden, again a gradual reduction of slavery was followed by the official end in 1847.
  • Many other countries also removed slavery in the 19th century, although often accompanied by decades of previous change and almost-abolition.
