The first manned space expedition was performed by Yuri Gagarin, a Russian Cosmonaut aboard the spaceship Vostok 1 (a Vostok 3KA spacecraft).
Vostok 1 took off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 0607 UTC (1107 Local), on the 12th of April, 1961. The manned spacecraft orbited the earth once, in 108 minutes. After reentry, Gagarin ejected from the pod at approximately 23,000 feet above the ground, and parachuted safely into a farmer's field. The pod released its chute at approximately 8,200 feet, and landed 10 minutes prior near the same spot.
