What was the first microscope made of?

The earliest simple microscope was merely a tube with a plate for the object at one end and, at the other, a lens which gave a magnification less than ten diameters. They were made of gold and silver with a piece of transparent crystal thicker in the middle than at the edges.

Although I still think it was made of twigs, the shell of a chicken egg, and some petrified carrots.
