May 1942, the "Battle of the Coral Sea" was the FIRST clash of carriers. The largest US Aircraft Carrier, the 888 foot long USS Lexington was lost in the battle. The Japanese lost one light carrier. Coral Sea was a "Tactical" victory for the Imperial Navy as they sunk the largest vessel. The battle was a "Strategic" victory for the US Navy, as they had stopped Japan from extending southward.
