The first newspaper
published in Hindi was the Uddand Martand' and the first Urdu newspaper was
jahe jahannuma. They commenced publication together but the Hindi newspaper
had to be discontinued after a year for financial reasons lack of government
support. The newspapers sought to raise the status of Hindi to a language, affect
change in society, inform its readership of international and national events, and
sensitise government to the problems of the citizens.

∙ 12y agoBangal Gazette (founded in 1779) was the first newspaper of India published in Calcutta, the editor of which was James Augustus Hickey who was a pioneer in bringing the start of journalistic activities in the country.
Bengal Gazette because of whom it belonged to, was also referred to as Hickey's Journal. The Gazette had most of the news items and contents from England and also had the senction for letters from readers and items of gossip and scandals.
Hickey had a personal column of his own in the Gazette through which he directly communicated to the citizens which succeeded in arousing desirable sentiments in the public.
The governor general Warren Hastings and the Chief Justice Elijah Empey were often redeculed by him using innundoes. Once he was imprisoned for 1 year and fined Rs. 2000. Despite his imprisonment the Gazette continued to be published before it had to be permanently closed down two years after it was started.
The first published newspaper in India was the Bengal Gazette, also known as the Calcutta General Advertiser, which was published by James Augustus Hickey on January 29, 1780.
