The Roanoke Colony, which settled in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. A venture from Walter Raleigh, the colony was fledgling and then abandoned while its governor was in England obtaining supplies. Much speculation has been had since as to the cause, with only a single clue (CROATOAN carved into a fence, CRO into a tree) left behind.

The first colony was twice established at Roanoke Island in Virginia.

Sir Walter Raleigh sponsored an expedition in 1585, under Ralph Lane and Richard Grenville. The colony returned to England with Sir Francis Drake in 1586.

A second expedition was led by John White in 1587. When White sailed back to England for supplies, some 115 colonists, including White's granddaughter Virginia Dare, were left there. But when supply ships returned in 1590, the settlers had vanished, leaving only cryptic clues.

If you mean the current federal republic of the United States, there are several barrier islands on the shores of Chesapeake Bay on the east coast. Of these, Roanoke Island was first scouted. It was intended to be the first English settlement in America. Unfortunately, due to unexplained reasons, the colonists on Roanoke Island somehow vanished around the 1580s. Native Americans, hurricanes, or infertile land may have contributed.
