The Germans wanted to make an attempt to stop the allied advance across Europe. If they had been able to break through the lines, they could have split the Allied forces. The southern units may have been isolated and captured. The success could have meant a lessoning of pressure, which could have allowed them to regroup and be more successful. It could also have meant that a number of new weapons that were being developed could have been completed. Longer range missiles and jet aircraft being a couple that were on the verge of completion.

The Battle of the Bulge was fought between December 1944 - January 1945. It was fought in the Ardennes Forrest in Belgium. For the Americans, the ultimate goal is to push back the Germans back into Germany and enter the country to make them surrender. For the Germans, they had to stay put and defend their position at all costs but having the Russians coming from the east made things harder. When the Americans invaded Belgium, they tried to enter Germany but having experience the fierce defense of Germany, they turn their attention to the Netherlands. Operation Market Garden was commenced to try enter Germany via the Netherlands but failed. The Americans finally entered Germany via the Rhine River in Wallander, Germany.
