South Carolina was originally joined with North Carolina, and they split because of economic differences. In SC, the land was much richer along the rivers, and rice grew very well, making many citizens very wealthy. These wealthy citizens had large plantations. They also had an important trading relationship with Barbados, an English Caribbean colony. NC had little connection to the merchants in Barbados, and the land was not as fertile. As a result, they had mostly small farmers who were poorer and not so much of a plantation lifestyle.

The original colony of Carolina was given as a gift by the English king, Charles II to nobles who had helped restore him to power after his father lost his head to Oliver Cromwell. This is why Carolina is known as a Restoration colony.
