Until 1852, Kangchenjunga was assumed to be the highest mountain in the world, but calculations based on various readings and measurements made by the Great Trigonometric Survey of India in 1849 came to the conclusion that Mount Everest, known as Peak XV at the time, was the highest.

Probably Kangchenjunga. It is actually the third highest peak on the planet, but prior to the establishment of the height of Everest, Kangchenjunga was thought by many to be the highest. When the British survey was completed, Everest came out 'on top', and Kangchenjunga came in third.

What is the tallest mount before mount Everest?

Mount Everest was the highest mountain regardless of whether it was discovered or not. Due to tectonic movements, Mount Everest was growing since the dawn of humanity some 2-4 million years ago. Before that it is possible that Everest wasn't the highest mountain, but since there aren't any records stating height of mountains, then we could technically say that Everest has always been the highest mountain regardless of whether humans or their descendants named a higher mountain.
