WAS there a 5.0 liter engine in 1997? I know there wasn't in the Mustang, but there could have been in other cars, although I kind of doubt it...
As for the Mustang GT's horsepower in 1997 with its 4.6L SOHC engine, I believe it was 215 for '96 and '97, moving up to 225 in '98, and 260 with the "Power Improved" heads in 1999. The Mustang Cobra with it's 4.6L DOHC engine I believe was 305 in 1997.
There were 5.0 Liter engines in Ford Vehicles in 1997. Just not the Mustangs. Still used in vehicles such as the Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer, the 5.0 Liter produced in '96 was rated at 210 Horsepower and in early '97 the 5.0 Liter engines started receiving new cylinder heads (GT-40P series) which upped horsepower to 215. So to answer your question, the 1997 1/4 models had 210 HP and everything that followed after them, 215. The Ford 5.0L V8 continued being used in various vehicles until production ceased in December 2000.
