In 1921, the Miss America Pageant was originally an activity designed to attract tourists to extend their Labor Day holiday weekend and enjoy festivities in Atlantic City, which would in turn bring business to the Boardwalk. It was such a big hit that the Businessmen's League repeated it the following year.
