The battle of Stalingrad (August 1942-Feb 1943) had one main effect on WW2. The soviets stood strong and defeated the nazi's. The battle of Stalingrad was a turning point for WW2. If the nazi's won stalingrad it would have been very likely that they won.

Defeat for the German 6th army at Stalingrad eneded the attempt to reach the Caucasus oil fields. The German forces got no further East or South. After Stalingrad the Germans were almost always in retreat in the East & their forces were, by and large, outnumbered & outgunned by the Russians. As with the war in Africa at el Alemein, Stalingrad marks the high water mark of German expansion in the East.
