The main battle of the US Civil War that took place in July of 1863 was at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It, in fact, was the largest battle in the war, and the Union had clearly defeated the Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee. Sadly for the winning Union general, General Meade, he was not given his due recognition for the battle. President Lincoln admonished Meade for allowing Lee's army to escape to Virginia. This was an error by President Lincoln. General Lee would have altered the course of the war in some manner if Meade had lost the Battle of Gettysburg,

The North actually two key victories in July 1863.

First (and better known), was the defeat at Gettysburg (Pennsylvania) of General Lee's army by the Army of the Potomac under the command of Major General George Meade (July 1-3).

Second, on July 4 Ulysses Grant's siege of Vicksburg (Mississippi) ended with a Confederate surrender (by Lt. Gen. John Pemberton). Gettysburg was perhaps the more important psychologically, but Vicksburg was of more strategic significance, since it finally secured Union control of the Mississippi River, splitting the Confederacy in half. It also sealed Grant's already solid reputation as a commander in the West and set the stage for his appointment as General-in-Chief of the Union armies.

That was during the overall time span of Gettysburg and is often called Pickett's Charge because Robert Lee of the Confederates had Pickett (another confed.) charge against the center of the wall of Union soldiers. The South was so brutally defeated, that was the end of Gettysburg, basically.

Gettysburg is regarded as the battle that lost the Confederates the war.

This Northern victory came on the same day as the ending of the Siege of Vicksburg, on the Mississippi, and the double event was greeted with joy in the North when it was announced on the Fourth of July.

The major and most significant Union victory of 1863 was the three day Battle of Gettysburg. The Union victory there ended Robert E. Lee's chance to assault the basically undefended capital of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg. While the siege of Vicksburg is often mentioned as one of major significant importance, more so than Gettysburg, that is not true.

Nor was Vicksburg a battle that strengthened the reputation of Major General US Grant.

Controlling the entire Mississippi River did not result in an particular advantage to the North. No major offensives were the result of capturing and then paroling 30,000 Confederate troops.

Vicksburg was expendable.

With that said, Gettysburg prevented a Confederate victory that would have greatly endangered the North's ability to keep Northern political support. Especially in the wake of the New York City draft riots a few weeks after Gettysburg.

In looking back at Vicksburg, it took the Union almost 18 months to finally capture the city-fortress.

The delays, the foolish attempts to re-route the Mississippi River, only pointed out the inability to capture a city surrounded by Union troops.

As an important aside, the Confederate military high command believed that Tennessee was much more vital than Vicksburg. The so-called supply line cut created by the capture of Vicksburg has never shown up in any serious historical text book on the war that identified the city as a key or crucial target that had to be defended at all costs.
