From the viewpoint of all the countries threatened by the Japanese Empire's advances into Asia and the Pacific Ocean --and this would certainly include Australia -- the "main event" would have to be the Battle of Midway. Before, the Japanese had things all their own way and appeared invincible...definitely a threat to Australia. (The Allies would have had no way of knowing that Japanese Imperial naval plans for invading Australia would lack support from the army.) Midway showed they could be defeated, and the First Carrier Striking Force, essential to Japanese victories till then, was decimated, losing four carriers and all its planes and aircrews in a single day. From then on, the Allies, including Australia, would turn from desperate defense to counterattacking, starting with Guadalcanal.
