Tisquantum, or Squanto, was not a Native American chief, but was a kidnapped Native American from England that was brought with the Pilgrims. He helped them survive the winter by teaching the Pilgrims how to farm maize the native way. He also acted as their translator to the Wampanoag.
Squanto, or Tisquantum, appears to have been the sole Survivor of the Patuxet tribe. He showed them how to set corn and fertilize it, where to fish and where to forage for edible plants and fruit. Being a native of the abandoned village where the Pilgrims had settled, he stayed with them for the rest of his life.
