Thoroughbred Aristides with jockey Oliver Lewis On May 17, 1875
Aristides was the name of the first horse to win the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 17, 1875. He was a blood-red chestnut. He was prepared for the Derby by African American trainer Ansel Williamson, a posthumous inductee into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1998. He was ridden by African American jockey Oliver Lewis [1856 - 1924], a subsequent Kentucky businessman in Lexington.
Fusaichi Pegasus [foaled April12, 1997] was the winning horse in the 2007 Kentucky Derby. His winning jockey was Kent Jason Desormeaux [February 27, 1970]. The horse's unusual name, which combines his owner's first name and that of the winged horses of ancient Greek legends, often is shortened affectionately to 'FuPeg'.
