Ethiopia's original name was Abyssinia. Between 1936 and 1941, together with Italian Somaliland and Eritrea, it briefly formed Italian East Africa. Abyssinia means the conquerors of Arab, the king of Arabs.
abyssinia
The Ethiopian Empire was first known as Abyssinia. Abyssinia was once comprised of Northern Somalia, Djibouti, Southern Egypt, Southern Sudan, Yemen, and Western Saudi Arabia.
Contrary to popular belief and euro-centic historical views, Ethiopia is a word of purely Ethiopian origin. The word Ethiopia derived from king Ethiopis, who was one of Ethiopia's first king, a son of cush. From his reign on, the land of that area was called "Ethiopia".
The Greeks first arrived in Ethiopia during the reign of king Ethiopis, and it was the first time the Greeks came in contact with people of a such a dark complexion, so they began to use the word "Ethiopia" which they associated with dark-skin to signify these people.
The most famous old name I know was "Habesha" which has Arabic origin, and there is one more which is Abyssinia. Refer to the related link of Wikipedia it's a single paragraph about the history of the name of Ethiopia.
