Austin has alway been the capital city. WRONG!!! Before Texas integrated itself in to the union, and relinquished its domain over the chunks of Oklahoma Kansas Wyoming Colorado and about half of New Mexico that made up what was the Republic of Texas, five sites served as temporary capitals of Texas (Washington-on-the-Brazos, Harrisburg, Galveston, Velasco and Columbia) before president Sam Houston moved the capital to Houston in 1837. In 1839, the capital was moved to the new town of Austin by the next president Mirabeau B. Lamar.

The first capital of the Texas region was Santillo, in the state of Coahuila y Tejas established by Mexico in 1824. The capital was moved to Monclova in 1833.

The first government among the Texan revolutionaries was in Harrisburg, but the Convention of 1836 and the Texas Declaration of Independence took place in Washington-on-the-Brazos. The first Congress of the Republic was in Columbia, Texas in 1836. The first President of Texas after the victory over Mexico, David Burnet, established his govenment in Velasco.
