If "Wilmington, Delaware, USA" is meant by "Wilmington," then . . .

The Lenni Lenape (also called the Delaware), the original native habitants of the area before invasion by Northern Europeans called the area Paxahakink or Pakehakink.

The first European settlers were from Sweden. In March 1638 they established Fort Christina at the mouth of the Christina River at the area known as "The Rocks" at present-day Wilmington, Delaware.

Note: There are other locations in the USA with the name Wilmington in California, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York state, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. Plus, there are places named Wilmington in Australia and the United Kingdom (in England in the counties of Devon, Kent, and Somerset.)
