Matthew 2:1-2 tells us that the wise men came to Jerusalem from the East seeking the newborn King of the Jews. Given the overlap of the Greek term used to describe them in the Gospel with the uses of the same word in other Greek texts, it is likely that they were priests traveling from an area around Persia, which could mean that they were Zoroastrians, members of another rare monotheistic belief which practiced Astrology and whose members may have been seeking the fullness of truth.

Given the lack of information, it is difficult to pin down an exact route. However, we can be relatively certain they traveled from Persia to Jerusalem and then on to Bethlehem.

According to the Gospel of Matthew, the magi (also called 'wise men') came following a star from the east. First, the star led them westward to Jerusalem then back towards the south-east to Bethlehem, where it enabled the magi to identify the exact house in which the baby Jesus was to be found.

We can look first to Luke's Gospel to see whether this is what really happened, but its author knew nothing of the star or the three wise men, and the star was not recorded by any of the scribes who recorded all other interesting celestial events of the time. John Shelby Spong (Born of a Woman: A Bishop Rethinks the Birth of Jesus) explains that the magi (wise men) were not actual people and that Matthew's story of the wise men was Christian midrash.
