There is some disagreement on exact figures among scholars, but a rough estimate in terms of total population of Europe is around 45-50%. There was considerable variation on the local scale. Urban areas where hardest hit, and some areas around the Mediterranean had outbreaks several years running. Small towns and villages were less affected due to lower population density. More distant areas, like England, were also less affected, and estimates by some scholars are as low as 20% mortality for such areas.
