Cathedrals of any age are primarily for the worship of God. In medieval times they were also a sort of 'status race', in that each new cathedral tended to be bigger and more adventurous architecturally than the previous.

What was the purpose of the medieval castle in 50 - 100 words? It was a place of security. It was a place in which you could defend yourself from your enemies. It was a place from which you could attack your enemies. It was a fortress defending the area in which you lived. It represented power even though it may have been situated some considerable distance from the central government. It proclaimed to everyone for miles around, friend or foe, that the castle represented military and political power and if you wanted to take over, you had to get through the castle first. And if you tried you would be defeated
