The Second Battle of Ypres was the first poison gas attack of the war. It was made by the Germans, and chlorine gas was used. This battle also inspired John McCrae's poem 'In Flanders Field'. In addition, Canadian troops were proved capable in their success in holding the line regardless of the gas.

the first gas attack was used by the Germans,

it was also the worst battle that the Canadians fought, first time a colonial army( the Canadian Expeditionary Force) pushed back a major European continental army, beginning of chemical warfare for both sides and marked a terrible day on all the deaths that occurred, due to chemicals. ------

This depends on which battle of Ypres you are referring to. There were 3, The first (October 19th-November 22nd, 1914) halted the German advance, and led the Allies to hold 3.5 km of the line; it also marked the superiority of defence over offence. The second battle of Ypres (April 22nd-May 25th, 1915) was the first major use of gas (the first was on the eastern front), which caused all to develop a gas mask, and led to the use of gas to never be effective, or a surprise. The third battle of Ypres (commonly known as Passchendaele) (July 31st-November 6th, 1917), was the first successful use of tanks in a combined arms operation.

The purpose was to take over the strategic Flemish town, Ypres. Since it was easier for the Germans to go to Great Britain through Belgium instead of going through France as France did have the second strongest military at the time.
