Answer
What caused us to enter into the Second World War on the side of the Allies?
Pearl Harbor made it clear we were at war. The Japanese were on the side of the "Axis Powers" so we automatically were on the side of the "Allies."
Actually there is more to it that just that. We had fought along with the English and French in World War I, and against the Germans. There was still bad feelings against the Germans left over from that war.
There was great sympathy for the British as we saw England being bombed. Then too our language, much of our culture, and some of our religions were from England. Another important contribution was the broadcast from Edward R. Morrow, who was in London broadcasting the events as they happened on the radio.
In 1940 there was a VERY strong movement in America against getting involved in another war. Pearl Harbor caused that movement to disappear in a day.
Plus, Japan and the US were having arguments on "whos the big-daddy in the pacific" Japan told Germany that Japan would help take over America in helping Hitler's quest for world domination...Germany agreed and they both failed.

The simple answer is that they were attacked by a member of the Axis powers (Japan) and declared war on them. The illicited a declaration of war by Germany, Italy, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria. The longer answer involves years of relations and trade with the British, Hitler's seeming hatred of the US, after effects of World War 1, and other political issues dating back into the 19th century. Answer(2) Japan declared war on Russia and Germany betrayed Russia. I don't know about you, but I think that Russia no longer trusted Germany and wanted the allies to help them.

The greatest , most overwhelming reason, is Pearl Harbor. Because the US declared war on Japan , Germany and Italy ( Japan's allies) declared war on the US and things just went on. Of course there are many more reasons , that one is by far the greatest reason.
