During the beginning to the middle of the nineteenth century the American and Native relationships had virtually broken down. The Indians who had not assimilated had been forced westward. After the civil war the "poor savages" gained a lot of sympathy in the east. This was no surprise as the east coast had long since forced the Indian out of their regions. They could afford to be charitable. Towards the end of the century, sympathy had swayed much of the eastcoast to the Indian side after atrocities committed during the Massacre of Sand Creek and later, the Massacre of Wounded Knee became well known.
The Croatoan mystery is interesting and we still don't have any certainties. In summary, first colonists burned alive an indian chief thus causing distress between early settlers and tribesmen. This was one of many tribes that would fight between themselves, and now settlers. Not long after this incident Mr. White and his group of colonists settled Roanoke Island (which is now N Carolina). They were short on necessities and he traveled back to England to retrieve supplies. He was caught up in a War and his boat was used for England upon arrival. 3 years later he returned to Roanoke island to have no settlement but a word CROATOAN scribed on a tree. Nearby there was a Croatoan tribe, they were friendly with. The tree etching wasn't there to post blame but to say 'they know". So he went to the Croatoan village and their response was that a reptilian evil ( think devil) possessed them. This flows with the reports of cannibalism and fight for survival theories. Mr. White's granddaughter Virginia Dare was the first child born in America.
(Another croatoa story is that angry tribe massacred the men and took in the women and children. there is some talk of genetic testing of blonde/blue Indians. Nothing has come of this that I know of.)
The Southern colonists pushed the native Americans further west. Andrew Jackson had a strong hatred of native Americans.
Ithink that they were friends because they traded so I would guess that they would be friends.
