Mormonism

The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) was organized in 1830 by Joseph Smith. The Mormons later moved to the Midwest, where they often made their neighbors uncomfortable. Their dogma and rhetoric threatened many of their neighbors, and the Mormons found themselves unwelcome in places like Independence, MO and Nauvoo, IL. Smith was assassinated by some bigoted people, and the Mormons left Nauvoo and moved to Utah where they hoped for religious freedom.

Other contributors have added:

The above is true but failed to adequately convey the extent of the persecution the Mormons endured. They were mobbed, murdered, chased out of cities, etc. There were actually official government extermination orders in some areas, making it lawful to chase Mormons out of the city. The New York Times article cited below provides a very good synopsis. It was written by the estimable Noah Feldman, who is a law professor at Harvard University and adjunct senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. He writes frequently on religion and public life.

Other contributors have added:

Joseph Smith was a prophet and was called to restore the gospel on earth. He converted many people into the church. Thousands of people were converted. Now days, there are millions and millions of people that are Mormons.

"Mormons" are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The name "Mormon" is just a nickname, since the name of the Church is so long, although some Church members find it disrespectful so be cautious about how you use it! The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a Restorationist Christian denomination with nearly 14 million baptized members worldwide. It's members believe that it is the original branch of the LDS Movement, which is a major movement within Restorationist Christianity.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) was officially founded in 1830. Church members believe that it is a restoration of the original Christian and Jewish religion described in The Bible. Therefore, many Church members might answer your question by saying that there were no other religions before - it is the first and original.

The Church did not break off of any other denomination or sect, but it's original members came from many different Christian churches who were dissatisfied with what their churches taught.

A basic -- but very incomplete -- list of Mormon beliefs is found in the 13 Articles of Faith, to wit:

  1. We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
  2. We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression.
  3. We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
  4. We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
  5. We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.
  6. We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.
  7. We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.
  8. We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
  9. We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.
  10. We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.
  11. We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
  12. We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
  13. We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul-We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

The Mormon Church (formally known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) is a restoration of the original Christian church organized by Jesus Christ when he was on the earth. They belive, among other things, in salvation through Jesus Christ, and that he is the son of God the Father. What sets them apart from other Christian churches is that they believe that God still speaks to humankind today through a living Prophet. They also study the Book of Mormon along with the Bible.

You can learn more about their basic beliefs by visiting their official website, www.mormon.org.
