Portuguese Prince Henry the Navigator - who started the age of exploration - was fascinated by stories that somewhere along Africa's west coast an Christian empire was to be found, ruled by a mythical Priest John. There was no such person or empire, but in the process of looking for it the whole west coast - and a little later, the sea route to the Indies - was discovered. The Portuguese also wanted to spread Christianity to 'heathen' lands, but the Spanish spent much more energy on that when they discovered and colonized Middle and South America. Within a matter of two generations, the religion and culture of the Mayas and Incas was wiped out and replaced with Christian religion and culture.
