As a result of the Russian Revolution of 1905, Tsar Nicholas II allowed the creation of the Duma, a lower house parliamentary body democratically elected by the Russian people. The other result was the issuance of the October Manifesto by the Tsar which promised greater individual freedoms to the Russian people. As with any autocratic rulers, the Tsar soon reneged in part on all promises he made in order to stay in power. The Duma never became a governing body as promised. It was reduced to making recommendations which the Tsar was free to ignore.

The Russian Revolution of 1905 was significant in terms of Russia's future. The apparent result was to form a parliamentary type of country, in the manner of some progressive European ones. The parliament was called the Duma. It did little to change the power of the Russian Czar. Soon the peasant and worker uprising was basically defused and the Duma was a shell of a governing body. The revolution made it clear that the Russian bourgeoisie needed the autocracy to keep Russian workers in their place. Some historians say that the Czarist regime survived the 1905 revolution by splitting apart the workers from the middle classes.

How were the Russian Revolution and World War 1 linked?

The Russian Revolution and World War I were linked as "effect" and "partial cause". The exhausting war-effort brought added stress to the already tense national situation in Russia. When the Communists made their move for power in 1917, the war-exhaustion contributed to their success.

What was the effect of the October revolution?

The October revolution of 1917 followed on that year's February Revolution . In February, the revolution had led to the abdication of the Russian Tsar and to a Republic in which 'moderate' republican groups were the dominant parties. In October, the Communists - who had only been a minor force until then - profited from the fact that the new Russian Government had continued to fight the Germans, which led to continued economic chaos and growing unrest among the Russian army and Navy. The promise to get them out of the war got the army and Navy to side with the Communist, who then had no trouble overthrowing the existing Russian Government. The October Revolution then lead to Russia becoming a Communist State for well over the next 70 years.
