The Second Battle of Bull Run or Second Manassas was fought August 28-30, 1862,[1] as part of the American Civil War. It was the culmination of an offensive campaign waged by Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia againstUnion Maj. Gen. John Pope's Army of Virginia, and a battle of much larger scale and numbers than the First Battle of Bull Run(First Manassas) fought in 1861 on the same ground.

Lee had sent Jackson's Corps on independent duty in the area, and Pope sought to end the threat of Jackson's raids. Trapping (he thought) Jackson's men in an abandondoned railroad cut, he sent wave after wave against Jackson's troops, and was repelled each time.

Jackson was running low on ammo, and some men resorted to throwing rocks at the attackers. At the peak of the battle, when it appeared that Pope's superior numbers would finally overwhelm Jackson, Lee sent James Longstreet's Corps in on an attack on Pope's flank. Longstreet hit Pope like a thunderbolt, and the Yankees fled the field.

This battle further added to the aura of Lee's invincibility.

The effect of the First Battle of Bull Run was to cause panic and doubts among Northern generals, news media, the US government and ordinary Northern citizens. The loss to the Confederates was unexpected, despite the fact that General McDowell, General Winfield Scott and President Lincoln believed that the Northern troops were not yet prepared for battle field action. The leaders in Washington DC felt pressured to invade the South, capture Richmond and thereby end the rebellion. In the South, their victory gave them confidence that they could win their war of independence.

The effect of the Second Battle of Bull Run was to severely damage the confidence that President Lincoln had placed in his newest leader of the Army of Virginia, John Pope. It is believed that Pope's defeat enforced the idea in Union General George B. McClellan, that he was invaluable to the Northern cause.

For the South, it was a morale booster in that once again, it was seen that armies guarding Richmond were superior to whatever the nearby Union capital of Washington DC, could throw at them.

The effects on Confederate President Jefferson Davis and General Robert E. Lee were more substantial. It led both Davis and Lee to believe a raid into Northern territory would be successful.
