The first covenant is the Rainbow Covenant (Genisis 9) in which God commands the people and animals of Noah's Ark to repopulate the earth, and promises that he will never again flood the earth; leaving the rainbow as a sign of his promise.
The rainbow is a sign of the covenant that God made with Noah and his sons and their descendants, that there would never again become a flood to destory all flesh Genesis 9:8-17
Circumcision is a sign of God's covenant made with Abraham in Genesis 17:9-14.
In the Old Testament, the covenant between Yahweh and His people Israel (the Hebrews) progressed through multiple stages, and at least two signs were attached to it. When God called Abraham and established a covenant with Abraham and his descendants, He appointed circumcision as the sign of the covenant: "You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between me and you" (Genesis 17:11 ESV). Circumcision is the most prominent "sign" of the covenant between God and the Hebrews. However, at Mount Sinai, God also established the Sabbath as a sign or token of His covenant with Israel; see Exodus 31:12-18 and Ezekiel 20:11-20. (Earlier on, the rainbow had functioned as the sign of God's covenant with Noah and his family; see Gen. 9:17.)
Abraham, the patriarch of the Jewish faith. God made a Covenant with Abraham.
The outward sign was, and still is, the brit milah, which is the covenant of circumcision.Another outward sign of God's covenant with the Israelites is the Torah scrolls which the Israelites (Jews) possess. The scroll is called the Book of the Covenant (Exodus 24:4), the Ten Commandments are called the Tablets of the Covenant (Deuteronomy 9:9), and Judaism as a whole is called the Covenant (2 Kings 23:3). The rainbow would, from that point on, convey that lesson. The worldwide Flood was a vast historical lesson which God chooses not to repeat. He attached a covenant (Genesis ch.9) to this decision, to teach us that the lack of another worldwide flood is deliberate on His part, and not just due to natural causes. And because of Noah's righteousness (Genesis 6:9), God spoke this covenant to him, instead of waiting and revealing it to some later deserving person.See also:More about the FloodThe covenants of Noah and Abraham
The story of Noah is a creation story and its purpose was to help explain where we came from and why things are the way they are. In this story, God made a great flood that covered the whole earth but, after the flood subsided, made a covenant with Noah that he would never again send a flood to destroy humanity. The sign of his covenant was the rainbow. The story of Abraham, in the form we have today, was a story of the Hebrew people. Its purpose was to help explain where the people came from and why they lived in the land of Israel. The covenant had two important parts: to make Abraham the father of many nations and to make him the father of a great nation. As an Israelite legend, this meant that the great nation would be Israel. Thus the Israelites learnt that they were descended from a great leader who had come from Ur of the Chaldees to live in the Promised Land, but not yet to settle and own it to the exclusion of others. The sign of God's covenant would be the circumcision of all Abraham's male descendants.
