The guilt clause in the Treaty of Versailles was difficult for the Germans to accept because they did not actually start the war - World War One began in Austria and escalated from there. Also, agreeing to the war guilt clause meant that Germany would have to pay all of the reaparations - 132 billion marks (6.6 billion pounds).
