The man assassinated was a very minor official ... The real signficance of the Kristallnacht was that it marked a huge escalation of Nazi antisemitism. It was the first time that large numbers of Jews were subjected to widespread physical violence and murdered in Nazi Germany - and sent to concentration camps in large numbers, simply for being Jews (not for being left wing or liberal). It made it very clear to the German Jews that they were not physically safe in Germany. There was a stampede to leave Germany. It was highly significant.
The kristallnact was important because it was one of first major steps of the Persecuations of the Jewish people. This soon leaded of Putting Jews into Ghettos and Concentration Camps in 1939.
The main purpose was to terrorize the Jewish population and bully them into leaving Germany. As for Propaganda, many of the SA men (stormtroopers) involved in the pogrom were ordered to wear civilian clothes in order to give the impression that it was being carried out spontaneously by enraged members of the public.
It was an indicator of whether the rest of the world would react against anti-Jewish measures.

Favourably.
Following the Nazi seizure of powerin 1933, Hitler established a Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda headed by Joseph Goebbels. The Ministry's aim was to ensure that the Nazi message was successfully communicated through art, music, theater, films, books, radio, educational materials, and the press. There were several audiences for Nazi propaganda. Germans were reminded of the struggle against foreign enemies and Jewish subversion. During periods preceding legislation or executive measures against Jews, propaganda campaigns created an atmosphere tolerant of violence against Jews, particularly in 1935 (before the Nuremberg Race Laws of September) and in 1938 (prior to the barrage of antisemitic economic legislation following Kristallnacht). Propaganda also encouraged passivity and acceptance of the impending measures against Jews, as these appeared to depict the Nazi government as stepping in and "restoring order."
His name was Paul Joseph Goebbels. He was was a German politician and Reich Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945. He was known for his public speaking and deep and virulent antisemitism, which led to his supporting the extermination of the Jews in the Holocaust.
"Propaganda tries to force a doctrine on the whole people... Propaganda works on the general public from the standpoint of an idea and makes them ripe for the victory of this idea." Adolf Hitler wrote these words in his book Mein Kampf (1926), in which he first advocated the use of propaganda to spread the ideals of National Socialism-among them racism, antisemitism, and anti-Bolshevism. Following the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, Hitler established a Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda headed by Joseph Goebbels. The Ministry's aim was to ensure that the Nazi message was successfully communicated through art, music, theater, films, books, radio, educational materials, and the press.
