The Son's of Liberty were just ordinary people - ropemakers, dockworkers, butchers, bakers, and candlestickmakers.

Paul Revere, who became one of the leading Boston rebels and their chief messenger, was a pewter, and silversmith. Merchants joined the group at first, but soon became dismayed at its violence.

In October 1765, colonial delegates met at a Stamp Act Congress in New York. The Congress professed loyalty to the king, but vowed to resist all taxation levied without the consent of the colonial legislatures.

After the Townshend Taxes of 1767 were approved, Merchants in the colonies refused to import British goods until the Townshend taxes were repealed. In response, English troops would be placed to make sure the taxes would be paid.

With the event of the Boston Tea Party of 1773, it was a strong message to all who lived in America, that the time had come, that they must fight England, and become the independent nation that it should be.
