What made World War 1 the bloodiest and deadliest war up to that time in history did it have to be that way. Could things possibly have turned out differently and how?

It actually wasn't the bloodiest war up to that point- but it was definitely "one of the bloodiest". Far more people died in the Taiping Revolt in the 1860's than in World War I. As for "did it have to be that way?" - my guess is probably not. But that is one of the questions that historians, philosophers and political scientists have been arguing over since the war started. The Communist leader Lenin, for example, believed it was unavoidable and was unsurprised that it was as bad as it was. But there are plenty of opinions to the contrary, that the war could've been avoided- even the combatants believed it could have been avoided and that Germany forced it to happen, which is why Germany had to agree to the War Guilt Clause of the Treaty of Versailles.

The most negative effect was undeniably the resentment against the West that gradually increased among Germans: this resentment was utilized by Hitler and the Nazis in their rise to power, and it served as one primary cause of World War II.
